Why Your Neck and Shoulders Are Always Tight

The Problem

A lot of people say:  “My neck and shoulders feel tight all the time.”

It often builds throughout the day—especially with desk work, phone use, or stress. Sometimes it turns into headaches or discomfort between the shoulder blades.

This has become extremely common.

Why It Happens:

Usually, a few things are going on:

• The head stays positioned forward for long periods

• The shoulders stay slightly elevated or tense

• The upper back isn’t moving enough

Over time, certain muscles stay “on” constantly while others don’t do their job.

That imbalance leads to the feeling of tightness and stiffness.

Quick Tip

Try this simple reset:

Sit or stand tall.

Gently pull your chin straight back (like making a double chin).

Then relax your shoulders down.

Think:

“Head back, shoulders relaxed.”

This helps bring your posture back into a more neutral position.

When Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy addresses both the tension and the underlying cause.

Treatment may include:

• Improving mobility in the neck and upper back

• Reducing overactive muscle tension

• Retraining posture and movement habits

When everything starts working together again, the constant tightness usually decreases.

If your neck and shoulders always feel tight, it’s worth addressing before it turns into more persistent pain.
