Why Your Shoulder Hurts When Bench Pressing

The Problem

A lot of people come in saying something like:

“My shoulder hurts every time I bench press.”

It might start as a small discomfort, then gradually turn into a sharper pain at the front or top of the shoulder. Sometimes it lingers even after the workout is over.

This is one of the most common issues for people who lift regularly.

Why It Happens

Usually, a few things are going on:

• The shoulder is doing more work than it should

• The upper back isn’t stabilizing properly

• The bar path or technique is slightly off

When the shoulder loses stability, smaller structures like the rotator cuff and tendons take on more stress.

Over time, that repeated stress can lead to irritation and pain during pressing movements.

Quick Tip

Before you bench, try this:

Pull your shoulder blades down and back into the bench.

Keep them there throughout the movement.

Think:

“Chest up, shoulders set.”

This creates a more stable base and takes pressure off the front of the shoulder.

When Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy looks at why the shoulder is being overloaded in the first place.

Treatment may include:

• Improving shoulder and upper back stability

• Addressing mobility restrictions

• Adjusting movement patterns and technique

When the shoulder is supported properly, pressing movements usually become much more comfortable.

If bench pressing continues to cause pain, it’s worth getting it assessed before it turns into a longer-term issue.
