Sciatica vs Tight Hamstrings: How to Tell the Difference
The Problem
A lot of people come in saying:
“My hamstrings feel tight all the time, no matter how much I stretch.”
Sometimes there’s also discomfort down the back of the leg, especially when sitting or bending forward.
It’s easy to assume the muscles are just tight—but that’s not always the case.
Why It Happens
Usually, one of two things is going on:
• The hamstrings are actually tight and restricted
• A nerve (like the sciatic nerve) is irritated
When a nerve is involved, the body can create a sensation of tightness as a protective response.
This is why stretching sometimes doesn’t help—or even makes it worse.

Try this: Sit tall and slowly straighten one knee.
If you feel:
• A strong pulling or tingling sensation
• Symptoms that change when you move your neck or ankle
It may be more nerve-related than muscle tightness.
When Physiotherapy Helps
Physiotherapy helps determine whether the issue is muscular or nerve-related.
Treatment may include:
• Reducing nerve sensitivity
• Improving mobility in the hips and lower back
• Guiding the right type of movement (not just stretching)
Once the correct cause is addressed, that constant “tight” feeling usually improves.
If stretching hasn’t worked, it’s a good sign something else may be going on.
